UWP Barcode Scanner SDK

Two ways to integrate on Windows

The UWP Scanner SDK supports barcode scanning only and includes our Ready-to-Use UI.

The Windows Scanner SDK does recognition only, meaning you build the UI yourself. In addition to barcode scanning, it also offers document scanning and data capture.

UWP Barcode Scanner SDK

Barcode scanning in challenging conditions

The Windows Barcode Scanner SDK is designed to perform in challenging real-world environments, such as:

  • Damaged barcodes
  • Low-light environments
  • Tiny or distant barcodes

Customizable UI components

Our Ready-To-Use UI components cover all barcode scanning scenarios and are highly customizable. Learn more

Add a fast and reliable Windows Barcode Scanner to your app

We offer two options for adding scanning to your Windows apps.

The Scanbot UWP Barcode Scanner SDK integrates natively into Windows applications built with C# or VB.NET. Its Ready-to-Use UI Components make integration quick and customization easy.

The Scanbot Windows Scanner SDK is our latest scanning engine, built for server, embedded, and edge device use cases. It handles recognition only and doesn’t include a UI. Besides barcode scanning, it also supports document scanning and data capture.

Both SDKs support all major barcode formats, including QR Code, PDF417, and EAN, and parse data formats such as GS1, IATA, and AAMVA. The engine is optimized for challenging conditions like low light, damaged barcodes, and scanning at angles.

Technical requirements

The Scanbot UWP Barcode Scanner SDK includes pre-built UI components and requires:

  • UWP Version: 10.x or higher
  • Languages: C# and VB.NET
  • Hardware: Rear-facing camera with autofocus
  • Architectures: x86, x64, ARM, ARM64

The Scanbot Windows Barcode Scanner SDK extends beyond UWP, but doesn’t include UI. Requirements are the following:

  • Languages: C and Python wrappers
  • Windows x64 and x86 systems

How to integrate the Scanbot UWP Barcode Scanner SDK

The SDK offers various ways to extract barcodes from a live camera feed or still images.

Scanner UI

For live detection, you can use our so-called Ready-To-Use UI Component (RTU UI) or implement a custom scanner UI by using our Classic Component.

Ready-To-Use UI Component

This UI component is a final and ready-to-use Page component and is meant for the simplest interactions, with the fewest customizations possible, but can be implemented within a couple of minutes.

To launch Scanbot SDK’s barcode scanner Page, run the following:

var scanner = new BarcodeScanner();var configuration = new BarcodeScannerConfiguration();BarcodeResult result = await scanner.Start(Frame, configuration);Debug.WriteLine(result.Barcodes);

This approach returns a BarcodeResult object and then closes and properly disposes the scanner Page itself.
This BarcodeResult object contains a list of barcodes, each with a SoftwareBitmap containing a crop of the detected barcode, and, if something went wrong, a Scanbot.Model.ScanbotSdkException object with a message.

Classic Component

If you wish to build your own layout, we advise you to use BarcodeScannerComponent. It’s a XAML-compliant camera component that offers endless recognition and handles all initialization and error-handling for you. This approach allows you full customization of the UI and workflow. Since you have full control over the lifecycle of this component, you can implement continuous scanning.

Add the component to your view:

<Grid x:Name="Root">
    <scanbot:BarcodeScannerComponent x:Name="BarcodeScanner"/>
</Grid>

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the UWP Barcode Scanner SDK and the Windows Scanner SDK (Server)?

The UWP SDK includes a Ready-to-Use UI and works on UWP apps with C# or VB.NET. The Server SDK has no UI, works across modern Windows apps generally, adds document and data capture, and uses C or Python wrappers.

Is the UWP Barcode Scanner SDK still supported?

Yes. The Scanbot UWP Barcode Scanner SDK can still be used indefinitely by new and existing customers, but there is no active support. Since UWP SDK is on V7, it will require the legacy license key format.

Which one should I use if I'm starting a new project?

 If you're building on UWP and want a fast, pre-built UI, use the UWP SDK. If you want the newest scanning performance, plan to build your own interface, or need document/data capture alongside barcode, use the Server SDK.

Does the Windows Server SDK have a UI?

 No. It's backend-only. You build the interface and call the SDK for recognition.

What languages does the Windows Barcode Scanner SDK support?

The Scanbot UWP Barcode Scanner SDK integrates natively into Windows applications using VB.NET or C#, with a finished scanner UI included.

The Windows Scanner SDK ships as C and Python wrappers, with .Net and C++ coming soon.
