Understanding rMQR codes

What is an rMQR code?

The Rectangular Micro QR Code (rMQR) is a two dimensional code developed by Denso Wave and standardized as ISO/IEC 23941 in 2022. This extension of the Micro QR code family offers similar functionality, but in a rectangular format optimized for narrow spaces and curved surfaces such as test tubes.

A rMQR can store several data types, including numeric and alphabetic characters, kanji, and binary data. Thanks to Reed-Solomon error correction, these codes maintain data integrity even when partially damaged. Depending on the selected error correction level (M or H), 15% to 30% of data can be recovered.

Structure and components

The rMQR Code is a rectangular variant of Micro QRs and conventional QR Codes. Its structure consists of several key components:

  • Data region: The area where the information is encoded. It consists of black and white modules representing binary data (1s and 0s).
  • Finder patterns: A main bullseye pattern in the top left corner and a smaller sub-pattern in the bottom right help scanners locate and orient the code.
  • Corner patterns: Patterns located in the top-right and bottom-left corners, up to 3×3 modules in size. They may be smaller or absent in some versions.
  • Timing patterns: Alternating black and white modules along the edges that determine symbol version, density, and ensure proper scanning alignment.
  • Alignment patterns: Smaller square patterns throughout the code that correct for distortion when scanning curved surfaces or at angles. The number of alignment patterns increases with the code’s size to maintain readability.
  • Quiet zone: A margin of at least two modules wide helps scanners detect its boundaries.
  • Format information: Provides details about the structure of the symbol and its error correction level.

Rectangular Micro QR Codes come in 32 versions, each with a different combination of height and width. The sizes range from a minimum of 7×43 (narrow) or 11×27 (compact) to a maximum of 17×139 modules.

They can encode up to 361 numeric characters, 219 alphanumeric characters, 92 kanji characters, or 150 bytes of data.

Applications of rMQR codes

Medical and pharmaceutical industries

These barcodes are ideal for marking test tubes, vials, and other cylindrical or curved surfaces where conventional QR codes may not fit.

Manufacturing

They can be applied to narrow or irregularly shaped parts and components for product tracking, quality control, and inventory management.

Advantages of rMQR codes

  • Compact size: They store up to 361 numeric or 219 alphanumeric characters in a compact, rectangular format. Their rectangular shape is specifically designed for narrow spaces, allowing to store large amounts of data in space-constrained environments.
  • Error correction: Two EC levels support up to 30% code restoration.
  • Versatility: There are 32 versions of rMQR Code with a variety of dimensions, from 7×43 or 11×27 to 17×139 modules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are rMQRs used?

Rectangular Micro QR Codes are commonly used in healthcare industries for labeling medical vials, test tubes, and other specimen containers. This ensures accurate tracking and traceability throughout medical processes.

What is the difference between a Micro QR and an rMQR?

Both are variants of the standard QR code, but they have some key differences. RMQR is rectangular in shape and has higher data capacity. Micro QR codes come in 4 versions, while rMQR has 32 versions. On the other hand, rMQR offers only two levels of error correction, while Micro QR offers four.
