Understanding GS1 DataMatrix Codes

What are GS1 DataMatrix codes?

 

The GS1 DataMatrix code is a two-dimensional (2D) barcode and a variant of the Data Matrix symbology. Even though it is based on the ISO/IEC 16022 standard it has specific features that distinguish it from the generic Data Matrix code:

 

  • FNC1 Start Sequence: at the beginning of the encoded data, enables scanners to process the information according to GS1 System rules
  • Application Identifiers (AIs): uses standardized AIs to encode various types of information
  • Data structure: supports a structured data format that enables the encoding of multiple pieces of information, such as GTIN, expiration date, batch number, and more

 

 

GS1 DataMatrix codes can encode large amounts of product data, including the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), with up to 2,335 alphanumeric and 3,116 numeric characters. They store significantly more data than 1D barcodes in smaller spaces, which makes them suitable for small prints or direct marking on products. Additionally, they have error correction capabilities that make them readable even when partially damaged.
