Interleaved 2 of 5 code
The Interleaved 2 of 5 code, or ITF, is primarily used for commercial applications.
It is made out of bars with two differing widths, narrow and wide, and includes a start character and a stop character. Interleaved 2 of 5 codes have a distinctive feature that distinguishes them from other 1D barcodes, called bearer bars: a black border surrounding the barcode, which enhances scanning reliability.
ITF codes use interleaving for encoding data. They only encode pairs of digits, where the first digit of the pair is represented by bars and the second by spaces. This limits their encoding capabilities to only even numbers of digits.
Of its several variants, the best known is ITF-14, which can encode a 14-digit Global Trade Item Number.
History of the ITF code
Interleaved 2 of 5 was created by David Allais, who notably developed Code 39, Code 11, Code 93, and Code 49.
Initially, it was supposed to improve the JAN code (Japanese, Article Number), enhancing product identification and logistics tracking.
In 1987, it was standardized as JIS-X-0502. Although not standardized by ISO, its variant TF-14 came into widespread use.
Applications
ITF codes are especially useful in cases where large quantities of items are used. They facilitate the tracking and managing of products.
ITF codes are used across several industries, most notably in:
- Logistics: Interleaved 2 of 5 codes are a popular choice for inventory management and tracking in warehousing and shipping.
- Distribution: ITF code is commonly used on corrugated cardboard boxes, as its bearer bars ensure accurate scans. Especially IFT-14 is a popular choice for labeling boxes, cases, and pallets that contain multiple units of the same product.
- Manufacturing: Throughout the manufacturing process, ITF codes are used to track products and materials.
- Retail: In retail, ITF codes are used for inventory level tracking and for managing large quantities of items.
