Bison Transport aims to save over 300 hours a month with the Scanbot Barcode Scanner SDK

Goal

Bison Transport sought to digitize cross-docking further by labeling inbound pallets with barcodes, eliminating manual tracking and enabling Bison to supply real-time freight status updates.

Challenge

Bison Transport was looking for a barcode scanning solution that could be easily integrated into the internal web app, ideally without managing additional vendor relationships. The solution had to offer enough flexibility to be further modified to cover future needs. The team evaluated various options to determine the best solution.

Solution

The Scanbot Barcode Scanner SDK offers rapid, reliable scanning of all common 1D and 2D barcodes. Moreover, Bison’s developers were convinced by the scan quality and ease of integration of the Barcode Scanner SDK into their freight planning tool.

From slow, manual workflows to streamlined operations with barcode scanning

Bison Transport specializes in cross-docking, a logistical practice where goods are unloaded from inbound vehicles and directly loaded onto outbound vehicles with minimal warehouse activity. Until now, Bison used manual, paper-based processes to keep track of incoming and outgoing pallets. This method burdened warehouse workers with additional work steps. Time-consuming and error-prone, it also led to irregular and late updates to customers.

Therefore, Bison Transport sought to digitize cross-docking further by labeling inbound pallets with barcodes. These barcodes will eliminate most manual tracking, saving 300 hours per month. The system will also enable Bison to supply real-time freight status updates. This is a service usually provided by companies with more warehouse activity – but one customers increasingly expect. Offering the same service experience as larger warehouse management systems will improve customer satisfaction and help Bison Transport stay competitive.

The Scanbot Barcode Scanner SDK offers rapid, reliable scanning of all common 1D and 2D barcodes. Bison Transport chose the Scanbot Barcode Scanner SDK partly because of the previous positive experience with our Document Scanner SDK. Moreover, the developers were convinced by the scan quality and ease of integration of the Barcode Scanner SDK into their freight planning tool.

“Our developers felt that the Scanbot Barcode Scanner SDK provided the best scanning quality and ease of implementation.
With this solution, time reduction in ensuring accuracy of manifests is estimated at 134 hours per month. We will decrease the amount of manual activity and drive customer satisfaction by providing updates in real-time.”

Bison Transport's improved workflow with the Scanbot SDK

The process before the Scanbot SDK

  1. Warehouse workers unload truck trailers and distribute the freight to other trailers.

  2. They have to remember what they did, where the freight is going, and whom to inform, then write this down on paper. They then have to manually update the freight inventory.

  3. Afterward, they have to manually scan the paper and email it to a dispatcher or planner.

The process with the Scanbot SDK

  1. Warehouse workers label incoming pallets with barcodes containing information about their order and move numbers.

  2. With a quick scan of the barcode using Bison Transport’s web app, they send this information to the backend.

  3. With a quick scan of the barcode using Bison Transport’s web app, they send this information to the backend.

Scanbot SDK's vision and mission

Our initial goal for the Scanbot SDK was for it to read all kinds of data via mobile devices – today, this has become a reality. The easy-to-integrate Barcode Scanning, Document Scanning, and Data Capture software creates virtually endless possibilities to streamline and facilitate processes for companies, employees, and customers alike, whether in retail, logistics, manufacturing, or healthcare.

We now build computer vision algorithms and machine learning models that understand all kinds of different data types. Our efforts open up even more possibilities for automated workflows that connect and process data in real time.

At the same time, we want to protect users’ personal data, which is why we opted for on- device intelligence. Scan results are encrypted before transmission to keep them safe from any outside attacks. To guarantee maximum privacy, no data is ever sent to Scanbot SDK’s or any other server.
