What is GiroCode?

GiroCode is a German payment method that uses standard QR codes to simplify making bank transfers. It is based on the German standard for electronic payment transactions and is primarily designed for use in Germany. It combines the convenience of QR code technology with the already established SEPA credit transfer system. A similar payment method is spread in varying European countries.

A GiroCode barcode contains the following data:

• Recipient name
• IBAN (International Bank Account Number)
• BIC (Bank Identifier Code)
• Payment amount
• Purpose of payment/reference

History

The EPC QR code, the predecessor of GiroCode, has existed since 2012 when Austrian payment facilitator STUZZA defined the content of a QR code that could be used to initiate money transfers with the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). 

In February 2013, the European Payments Council (EPC) published the document “Quick Response Code: Guidelines to Enable Data Capture for the Initiation of a Credit Transfer,” which provides guidelines for using QR codes to facilitate SEPA credit transfers. Austrian banks quickly adopted those guidelines, and Finland followed them in 2015. Around the same time, Germany implemented GiroCode. Finally, The Netherlands followed up in 2016.

GiroCode is a German payment system that simplifies money transfer processes. With a banking app that offers QR code scanning, users can scan GiroCodes on fees, invoices, and other documents. Using a GiroCode scanner instead of manual data entry for bank transfers is supposed to fight errors that might cause additional processing time.
