What is a QR code?

A QR code, short for Quick Response Code, is a two-dimensional barcode that can store a large amount of information in a relatively small area. The QR code consists of a pattern of black and white squares that can be scanned by barcode reading apps on mobile devices, which decodes the information encoded within the pattern.

Definition of QR codes

There are two types of QR codes: static QR codes and dynamic QR codes. Static QR codes are fixed and cannot be changed once created. Dynamic QR codes, on the other hand, allow for changes to the data stored within the code, making them ideal for use in marketing campaigns or other situations where the information being conveyed may change over time. Therefore, QR codes are particularly popular in advertising, such as on flyers or shop windows, in public transport and airline ticketing, and in parcel delivery. QR codes are 2D barcodes that store a maximum of 7089 digits or 4296 alphanumeric characters.

Micro QR codes are a smaller version of traditional QR codes, designed to store and convey information in a more compact format while maintaining the same functionality and scanning capabilities.

Use cases of QR codes

QR codes have a wide variety of use cases. They can be used for simple tasks like providing contact information or website links, or for more complex tasks like tracking inventory or allowing customers to make purchases with their smartphones. Some common uses for QR codes include:

Marketing and advertising campaigns

In marketing, QR codes can be used to link consumers to promotional offers or product information. In retail, they can help customers access product details, pricing, and availability by scanning the code with their smartphone. They can also be used for contactless payments, eliminating the need for cash or cards.

Healthcare

In healthcare, QR codes can be used to store patient data and medical history, providing quick access to critical information in emergencies. They can also be used in event management, allowing attendees to quickly register, access event information, and check-in at the event using a QR code.

Transport & Logistics

QR codes can also be used in transportation and logistics, enabling efficient tracking of packages and shipments. They can be scanned at every stage of the delivery process, providing real-time updates to both customers and delivery personnel.

Education

In education, QR codes can be used to provide students with access to additional resources, such as videos, presentations, or quizzes. They can also be used to create interactive scavenger hunts or to provide easy access to campus maps and schedules.
