Scanbot SDK: The Year in Review and 2019 Outlook

For the Scanbot SDK 2018 has been a very successful year full of learnings and developments. Thank you for accompanying us on this journey with valuable feedback and ideas. Here is an overview of the most impactful SDK developments in 2018:

Ready-to-Use (RTU) UI components

Following our goal to make the integration of the Scanbot SDK possible with as few lines code as possible we’ve developed a set of scan components which are directly delivered with a standardized user interface. This interface is customizable to match your brand. The components come with all the learnings from our Scanbot app and are designed to help the user and create the best possible scans. And we didn’t just build it for our native iOS and Android SDKs but also published them for Cordova, Xamarin, Xamarin.Forms and React Native!

Currently, you can use RTU components for document scanning, barcode scanning, QR code scanning, and MRZ scanning. There’s also a component to crop documents with magnetic handles, and we won’t stop here. You can expect much more RTU components next year to support even more scanning scenarios and cover more steps in the whole workflow.

New image filters

Based on our success with new image filters in our Scanbot app, we’ve now also included these advanced algorithms into the SDK and have three new presets that you definitely need to check out.

PureBinarized

Based on a lot of feedback, we’ve developed this filter to support true 1-bit images which can be stored in the highly efficient TIFF format to save space on your servers. The TIFF format can be tuned to be ten times smaller than JPG, which will, of course, save a lot of bandwidth and storage costs in the long run.

BackgroundClean

This is our most advanced filter and optimized for documents with color and images. Blemishes on the paper and crinkles are removed while colors look vibrant and text remains sharp.

BlackAndWhite

The Black & White filter now shows much more detail, because we added an additional step to clean the paper background before the image is converted to mostly black and white pixels.

iOS SDK

The iOS SDK can now be conveniently implemented with the CocoaPods dependency manager. This solution makes it easier for your developers to integrate it and stay up to date.

It’s also the first version of the Scanbot SDK to receive the new Preferred or Required Aspect Ratio features, where you can lock the scanner to a list of predefined paper sizes like US letter or DIN A4. This restriction makes the detection even less error prone and faster for you.

Android SDK

On Android, we’ve updated the SDK to support native 64-bit (arm64-v8a) libraries and the new AndroidX libraries by Google. The software components help you to speed up your development and save you from having to write standard features on your own.

Good to know: From August 2019, the Google Play store will require you to use native 64-bit libraries for your apps so you might want to plan your update well in advance. Read more

MRZ scanner

Following the latest Anti-Money-Laundering and Know-Your-Customer laws and regulations, we’ve added machine-readable-zone (MRZ) detection to our scanner. This allows you to read and verify the MRZ on passports, id cards, visa documents and more worldwide. Soon you’ll even be able to combine this feature with our standard documents scanner components to save images of the original documents along with the extracted data.

Did you know? Since the Scanbot SDK works entirely offline, meaning no data is ever sent to servers controlled by us or a 3rd party, it complies with data protection laws like the GDPR and therefore implementing such workflows is hassle-free.

German disability certificate scanner (AU-Bescheinigung)

As an example of our data extraction capabilities for standardized documents, we’ve developed a scanner to extract data from German disability for work certificates automatically. The module can extract all relevant data and instantly hand it over to your app to streamline the manual workflows for your employees which are currently in place.

The Scanbot SDK Demo App: A free app to test it all

To make it easier for you to evaluate and discover our latest advancements, we’ve recently published the Scanbot SDK demo app to the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. Use it to stay up to date and see an example of the implementation and workflow. Since it’s based on our RTU components mentioned above, what you see is what you can easily implement in your app, too. Of course, your developers can still also compile the example app code from GitHub like before.

Looking Ahead: The Scanbot SDK in 2019

We hope that our solutions will continue to improve and add value to your workflows every day in this new year. We are looking forward to providing even more convenient, cutting-edge features. Also providing more flexible data extraction solutions so you can stay ahead is another point on top of the agenda. This is especially important as the industry continues to move towards robotic process automation and digitization.
